When Workplace Change Hits Hard
In my day job, there’s a lot of change right undergoing a period of transformation and colleagues who I’ve know for years have left, or are leaving.
Whilst this presents opportunities, and can be exciting for those who have left to pursue new experiences, it can be tough for those who remain. There can be feelings of uncertainty at what the future holds, sadness at not seeing friends and colleagues as regularly as previously and a feeling of being left behind as well.
Why Change Can Feel So Unsettling
If work is your safe space, the known quantity in your life, where you turn up, do your job and then go home, significant changes may lead you to feel that the strong foundations you thought you had are a little bit rocky.
What You Can Do to Support Yourself
If this sounds all too familiar, what can you do?
- Focus on what you can control. Do your job to the best of your ability.
- Take it one day at a time, at least until you’re through the worst of it.
- Plan nice things to do outside of work, so that you have something to look forward to. (I’m going to do the Snoopy trail in London next month, for example!)
- Talk to someone that you trust. You’re not going through this alone and it helps to get everything out of your head.
- Try a mindfulness practice – this could be journalling, meditation or even gratitude. These all help to calm the nervous system.
- Reframe the situation. Whilst there is so much out of your control, you have a job, you have people around you who care and you will get through this.
You’re Stronger Than You Think
I’m doing all of these in my own way and I’m also reminding myself that I’ve been through tough times before and have come out the other side.
If you feel that you need a little extra help to get through a tough situation, please reach out, I’d love to support you.
