The Idea That Started It All

I had an idea in February; I wanted to launch a podcast in September of this year. My plan was to start my business in April and then get to a place where my podcast would go live in September.

Facing My Inner ‘Little Miss Technophobe’

At this point, I’ll say that I jokingly call myself ‘Little Miss Technophobe.’ I’m not the most technologically proficient person you’ll ever meet (I still haven’t been able to tune in my TV and I’ve had it since January!) but I’m prepared to give it a go and see what happens…

The Countdown to Launch

I dipped in and out of planning, coming up with themes and topics, but not really doing much as I had months to go… Until I didn’t! In the last month, I realised September was sneaking up on me, so I read a book (‘How to Start a Podcast’ by Paul Teague, which I found immensely helpful, though it was slightly out of date as tech moves very fast!) and watched hours of YouTube videos (some better than others!), designed artwork on Canva and last Friday evening, I released Episode Zero.

On Saturday morning, I went to Spotify and Amazon music and it was there! I have since set up creator accounts on both platforms, as well as YouTube, and now my podcast, Discovery Corner® can be found on all good podcast providers! (In addition, I’m working with Apple and hopefully it’ll be on Apple Music in the not-too-distant future.)

In my little story so far, I’ve demonstrated perseverance and determination, but what about limiting beliefs? Other than my inner voice telling me I’m rubbish with technology, there’s also a little voice that chirps up every now and then that says I don’t see things through.

Limiting Beliefs: Where They Come From

Limiting beliefs are things that we believe about ourselves, based on the opinions of other people, who share them with us and we take them on as true. They may come from something we did once, as a child, and a parent or teacher, for example, says something to us and poof! That’s where our belief came from. And then, instead of looking for evidence that this opinion is nonsense, we look for ways to back it up, as adults know more than us, right?!

These ‘unhelpful’ opinions are then repeated throughout our lives and that seed has been sown, and hey, we’re not good at something, or, in my case, I don’t see things through.

Seeing Yourself Through New Eyes

As adults, we need to look at this belief through our current eyes – do we never see things through, or do we just not do things that actually we don’t really want to, that don’t make us happy and aren’t really who we are? Where, in reality, when it comes to what we really want, what we truly believe in, we show up for ourselves, again and again, and see things through from a crazy idea, right through to the very end and then maybe even help others to do it too.

Perseverance and Determination in Action

For me, rather than not doing something because I’m terrible at tech and I ‘never see anything through,’ I researched, planned, recorded, edited and put out a podcast, all on my own and it’s now able to be listened to, as mentioned earlier, on all good podcast providers. (It also may not be the greatest 7 minutes of audio ever created, but we all have to start somewhere!)

What Could You Achieve Without Limiting Beliefs?

What can you do, if you challenged the beliefs that don’t serve you anymore? What could you be capable of? You may not know what your limiting beliefs are, and you also may need help unpacking and dismissing them – if that’s the case, I’d love to help you challenge yourself and do something you can brag to all your friends about. (I think everyone I’ve ever met is now aware I’m launching a podcast! I’m incredibly proud of myself, so of course I told EVERYONE.)

The question I’ll leave you with: what are you capable of once you’ve busted your limiting beliefs and shown perseverance and determination?
