Inspired by the Winter Olympics
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been hooked by the Winter Olympics. What those athletes achieved, I was genuinely in awe. I have a fear of heights, I’m not great at going fast, I don’t have great core strength or balance – all of which rule me out of pretty much every event, along with an inability to ski, skate, or anything else that was on display for the past 2 weeks!
The Dedication Behind Elite Athletes
BUT, I can appreciate the work, the dedication, the sacrifice that goes into being an elite athlete. The commitment, drive, focus and desire to be the best, not just the best that you can be, but the best out of everyone.
There Are No Guarantees (Even at the Top)
And then, having trained, given up everything to be the best, there are no guarantees. It doesn’t matter how good you are, someone can be better in that one moment. Your body can let you down, your equipment can malfunciont, someone else can have an off-moment that takes you out. You have a bad day when it matters the most…
The Highs, the Lows, and Everything In Between
The highs are immortality – you will always be an Olympic champion. But the lows. That you’ve worked for years for one chance, that you may never get again, that’s devastating.
What This Teaches Us About Our Own Goals
It’s also life. We learn to take the lows with the highs. We can’t truly appreciate one without the other. Most of us will never be in a position where being an Olympic champion is a possibility, or a reality. But we are in a position where that big goal is what gets us out of bed in the morning.
Your Dream Still Matters
Where we keep chipping away to realise whatever is our pinnacle. The dedication and focus we need. The support of friends and family. Remembering to enjoy not just the destination, but the journey as well.
Keep Going — You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
Because, whilst your goal may not lead to medals, to wealth and fame, it is still yours and as hard earned as any Olympic medal. So step out of your comfort zone, try something new. But keep dreaming big and keep going after your goal. Because it’s yours and it matters. And if you need help in reaching it, or maybe even in defining it, reach out, I’d love to be there for you.
