The paper diary is back

I’ve just bought myself a 2026/27 diary. The paper kind. That I carry around with me. I love the idea of embracing technology, but I’ve become aware that when I start to get overwhelmed, what’s the first thing that goes out of the window? Yes, technology…

The appointment I slept through and why it was the wake-up call I needed

I missed a call last week. It had been rearranged from the previous week, I hadn’t written it down and I actually slept through it; I had a nap after work and didn’t turn up. I’m still mortified. I’ve realised that having a work calendar, a calendar with outlook and a desk calendar doesn’t mean I don’t miss appointments. If they’re just in my emails, or WhatsApp (or wherever else I end up putting them!) there’s the potential for things to go awry…

One forgotten appointment in 18 months of business is still one too many, and that’s why I’ve gone back to paper. I trust paper. I don’t currently trust my memory as I can now forget things. Except lyrics from songs from the 1980s. I don’t seem to forget them! Useful things on the other hand, that’s a different story.

The reality of perimenopause brain fog

And that’s the reality of perimenopause. Noticing something that isn’t working for you anymore, or at least right now, and putting something in place so that you can manage. For you, it might be something techy. There are some great apps out there. It may help to talk things into an app which can make sense of what you’re trying to think. Or use an app, or technology to help with meetings, managing your inbox… The possibilities are there. Yes, you still need to check the accuracy, but if it helps, it takes some pressure off.

Tech or paper – what works for you?

For now, I’m embracing my paper diary, it’s not too big (which is great as I need to carry it everywhere!) and it provides me the reassurance that I know what’s going on. Provided I actually remember to put things in there!
