Today’s #businessadventcalendar is to write a blog post. As my website is still a work in progress, I thought I’d post it on my Facebook page.

‘It’s the most wonderful time of the year.’ At least, that’s according to Andy Williams. For some people, it truly is. Yet for others, Christmas can be really tough, so I wanted to share a few tips to help you navigate the festive season.

🐧 Christmas is a day. One day. Yes, it’s a day that a ridiculous amount of pressure is put on, but it is still just one day. 24 hours.

🐧 You can say no. The colours, noise, people, can all be overwhelming. If it’s too much for you, you can step back and do what’s comfortable for you.

🐧 Find your happy. Do you enjoy reading? Knitting? Doing puzzles? Going for a long walk? Can you find ways to incorporate them into your day?

🐧 If your idea of a perfect meal is beans on toast, washed down by a cuppa, then have that!

I’ve done the Christmas with family expectations, in debt (more than one), I’ve been ill and I’ve been on my own.

The best Christmases I’ve had, are the ones where I’ve done what I wanted and kept it simple. Maybe it’s easier as I’m on my own, but getting up, putting on festive pj’s, putting on the radio whilst I prepare lunch, doing some yoga, sharing messages with friends and chilling out, that’s what brings me joy.

I start buying myself things I like from about September, wrap them up, and put them away. I also start buying food then, to spread the cost, and that way, Christmas is about what I want.

This year, I’m doing things differently as I recently bought a house. I haven’t gone crazy on food or presents, but that’s OK. I’m in my own home, grateful for what I do have. I’ll probably go for a walk, I’m having some pork fillet for lunch and mostly I’ll enjoy a few days away from work, when I don’t have to do anything.

Whatever the day looks like for you, I hope that you’re safe, warm, and can spend the day as you choose. That might be cooking for 20, with everything associated with that, or it could be you and your cat. Either is OK. If it is a hard day, remember it is just a day, and do whatever you need to to get through.
